Yoga- Ancient Discipline For Optimal Health Or Religion?

There are many questions and doubts that abound in the minds of many people who are skeptical in regards to the practice of Yoga and whether or not it is a religion. Some people get a feeling that it is a religion due the kind of dedication and concentration they see involved in those who practice it. The truth of the matter is that the practice of Yoga does not come anywhere near any definition of religion as we know it. Yoga does not emphasize any particular philosophy or doctrine as it were. Yoga is only concerned about the psychological and physical disciplines that brings together the learning of how to combine breathing exercise, postures and meditation to achieve the good health of body and mind.

May be it is because the roots of Yoga are the same as those of Eastern Mythology, many people will tend to associate Yoga with Eastern religions such as Hinduism. It is true that both have their roots and origins in India but basically that is where the similarities come to an end. The psychological and physical procedures that go on in Yoga have no relationship whatsoever with the religion of Hindus. It also should come as a pleasant surprise to many that the dedication that people learn while practicing Yoga, will almost always enhance the person's religious beliefs just as they believe currently.

Yoga may not be a religion per se but it also comes packaged with a set of good practices that people who practice it are supposed to observe. It could be the learning of these ethics or practices that make many people believe it could be a religion, since they resemble what many people learn in their particular religions. The principles that Yoga practitioners learn include: Avoidance of violence, Chastity, Desisting from stealing, the practice of truthfulness as well as avoidance of any form of greed. There are also five disciplines which include: self-discipline, self-study, purity, contentment and centering on the divine.
