Yoga is an ancient practice that is alive and well today. With forms like Bikram Yoga and Ashtanga Yoga you can learn an old time secret that has been used for ages which can help deliver you from the stresses of modern life better than any science can afford you.

There are many people who simply think that Yoga is a synonym for Hinduism but then nothing can be further from the truth because Yoga is actually much older than Hinduism the religion. It may be a little hard to trace the exact origins of Yoga, since there are numerous theories regarding it but it is estimated to be over 5000 years since it begun being practiced. From the time it was first practiced from as early as 3000BC, it appears that the purpose was to learn postures related to breathing that would bring steadiness and repose. This had the effect of preparing the practitioners for the inflexibility of managing to sit down and meditate for a long period of time.

Coming to definitions, it is believed that the word Yoga originates from the Sanskrit language and it simply means to unite or merge. It may actually be defined as a form of exercise and the basis under which it is practiced is such that the body, breath and mind have an interlinked connection that can be used for the good of man. A good practice of Yoga involves holding the body in particular poses as well as controlling breath to create a desired harmony in the body. In a world that has become a miasma of chaos, those who practice Yoga are able to create a balance and harmony of their bodies, minds and emotions to help them discover some inner peace.

The real purpose of Yoga then is to put you in control of your own life, as opposed to being a victim of circumstances.

This can easily be achieved by learning the different movements, postures, breathing styles, relaxation techniques, and meditation which help to bring about a healthy and vibrant way of living. In a world of so many complexities, Yoga enables those who practise it to attain great benefits through simplistic procedures and practices. The practice is one of the very few really holistic practices we can talk about.
