What Is Pilates? Joseph Pilates And The Pilates Method

What is Pilates?

Pilates is a type of exercise and rehabiliation exercises originally developed by Joseph H Pilates. The Pilates exercises orginally consisted of 34 different exercises and were published by Joseph Pilates in 1945 in his book "Pilates' Return to Life Through Contrology". The Pilates method of exercise focused on development of the body through a series of cflexibility, core exercises, and inner awareness of the body to improve movement and function.

While the original name of "Contrology" that Joseph gave his exercise movements did not become part of the common vernacular, the term "Pilates" has become uniquely enmeshed with his exercises.

Over the past twenty years, Pilates has become wildly popular as more and more people discover the benefits of the Pilates exercise program

How popular is Pilates?

Pilates is one of the most popular exercise systems in the world. The Pilates exercises simplicity allow for the adaptability of the exercise movements based upon the current strength, flexibility and conditioning of the person. A well-trained Pilates instructor can adapt the exercises to the appropriate level for each client and can also assess when the next more difficult adaptation of the exercise can be attempted.

Pilates and back pain.

Many people have overcome their chronic back pain with Pilates. The Pilates exercises focus upon improving core (abdominal) and lower back strength. The strengthening of these muscles are important to improve the overall stability of the lower back, which is a key component of improving chronic low back pain with Pilates.

The increased core stability gained by Pilates can also help in a wide range of sports. Core stability and function is crucial to many sports such as golf, swimming and running.

How are Pilates exercises done?

Pilates exercise can be done either on the floor with a thin padded mat, (called Mat Pilates) or on a series of specifically designed Pilates equipment designed by Joseph Pilates in the 1940s. The basic design of his equipment has not significantly changed since he created his first "Cadillac" reformer equipment.

How to find a Pilates instructor or Pilates studio?

Finding a qualified Pilates instructor or Pilates studio is important to ensure that you receive proper training in the Pilates method. Look for Pilates instructors that have either completed an extensive internship or training program with a masters Pilates instructor, or have completed an extensive Pilates Instructor Certication Program
