The history of the paintball gun begun in the early 1970s, when it was used as a tool for marking trees and livestock. Charles Gaines, Hayes Noel and Bob Gurnsey were the first people to think up a new way to use the guns after Charles Gaines recent buffalo hunting expedition and they were eager to recreate the adrenaline rush that came with the thrill of the hunt.

In 1981 came the very first ever paintball game that involved twelve players using paintball guns from the Nelson Paint Company. The very first games of paintball were very different from modern day paintball games; they often threw the paintballs at each other, and Nelson pistols were the only gun available.

The paintball equipment used depends on the game type, for example, Woodsball, Speedball. Every player however, is required to have three basic pieces of equipment:

* Paintball Marker: also know as a Paintball Gun. To tag an opposing player with paintballs.

* Paintballs: The ammunition.

* Paintball Mask: To protect your face from paintballs.
